STAR FINANCIAL GROUP Assets: $1.2 billion Founded as a family business in 1943 in Upland to operate STAR Financial Bank and later headquartered in Marion, in 1999 it moved its headquarters to Fort Wayne. Today, it's constructing its 40th banking center. STAR employs 660 at locations that include Anderson, Carmel, Fort Wayne, Kokomo, Marion, Tipton and other Indiana towns. Its name is an acronym representing the first names of the bank's founders: Selah Wright, Thomas Marcuccilli, Arthur Hodson and Ralph Marcuccilli. Thomas Marcuccilli's son, also named Tom, today serves as CEO of STAR Financial Group. His brother Jim is CEO of subsidiary STAR Financial Bank. Jim Marcuccilli says the bank's growth has followed a somewhat different path than that taken by other banks when the state's banking laws changed in the mid-1980s. "Our decision was not to sell the bank and not to be a big acquirer. We were only at about $300 million in assets when the banking laws changed," he says. "Most of the growth has been internal, from our current customer base." STAR has maintained region presidents in each of its six operating areas, allowing for local decision-making. In 2001, STAR Financial Bank posted record earnings, a 63 percent increase over 2000.

Jim Marcuccilli, CEO of Fort Wayne-based STAR Financial Bank, agrees that the local touch is the key to successful competition. STAR began in the small town of Upland, eventually moved to Fort Wayne and is now in several Indiana communities, but "we've opted to have a continuation of local presidents in each market. We have six distinct markets and we have local presidents there for the lending decisions."
Our History STAR Financial Bank is an Indiana-based, community bank with more than $1 billion in assets. STAR maintains 39 banking centers throughout Indiana, including the communities of Anderson, Angola, Carmel, Churubusco, Columbia City, Elwood, Fort Wayne, Hamilton, Kokomo, Marion Muncie and New Castle. In addition to full service banking centers, STAR Financial Group, STAR Financial Bank's parent company, offers professional services in trust and asset management. The year was 1943. A small group of individuals led by two families - the Marcuccillis and the Wrights - were taking steps that would forever change their fortunes and those of their successors. In the fall of 1943, Selah G. Wright and Ralph and Tom Marcuccilli, in partnership with a small group of businessmen, bought their first bank - the Upland Branch of the Citizens State Bank of Fairmount- (site of George Hodson Farm) located in Upland, Indiana for $28,000. This was the beginning of the financial organization that, 56 years later, would be STAR Financial Bank, with $1 billion in assets and a net worth of almost $100 million. The 1950s and 1960s were decades of planned expansion into community banking. The expansion program started in 1952 with the purchase of The Gaston Banking Company of Gaston, Indiana. Over the next 15 years, eight more Indiana community banks were purchased. During this period, Indiana banking laws prohibited holding companies from owning and controlling more than one bank in the state. The goal of the founding partners was to bring about change in the banking laws that would permit multiple bank ownership and allow them to bring centralized control to the community banks. Frustrated by the Indiana banking laws, the group formed the Northern Indiana Financial Service Corporation (NIFSCO) in 1966. NIFSCO was the beginning of the data processing company that is in place today under the name STAR Financial Systems. Change was in the air in the seventies. The shift from rural economy to industrial economy continued. In the mid-1970's, Tom Marcuccilli's sons, Jim and Tom, joined NIFSCO full time to help the company further develop its electronic banking services. During this period, the company principals began to merge banks and relocate charters in county seats where bigger markets offered more growth potential. They did not, however, abandon their commitment to the communities and the local businesses they served. Finally, in April of 1985 - fours years after the last founding father, Tom Marcuccilli, died - the Indiana General Assembly passed the Indiana Banking Structure Reform Act, which permitted bank holding companies to own and control more than one bank in the state. With the passage of this act, a STAR was born. The new company was publicly announced on October 30, 1985. The name STAR, selected from over 300 names submitted by bank employees, was derived from the first names of the early principals (Selah Wright, Thomas Marcuccilli, Arthur Hodson, and Ralph Marcuccilli). Today STAR Financial Bank has grown to over $1 billion in assets and services its customers through 39 banking offices in central and northeast Indiana and through the Internet at www.starfinancial.com.
